Nichole Gronvold Roller is a native of the Northwestern region of Minnesota. She graduated from Minnesota State University of Moorhead, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art Education in 1997. Nichole currently resides in Central Illinois, and teaches art at a local high school in Tremont, Illinois.Nichole works with various media, but prefers acrylic on canvas or paper. Nichole’s subjects depicted in her art are mostly a reflection of the past. Some of the references to the past are her own memories, while others are of stories she has been told. The Midwest has inspired a large portion of Nichole’s artwork. Homes left in ruins and the natural landscapes of the Midwest have always been a point of interest to the artist. Attraction to old farmsteads has expanded to looking more closely at other objects that have an appealing story. In addition to the content surrounding Nichole’s art, she tries to capture the unique qualities of each place or object through the expression of line and color. Nichole uses color as a tool to captivate the power and mood of her subjects. She also incorporates these techniques, along with symbolic imagery to communicate the meaning behind her paintings. In many of Nichole’s paintings, she enjoys distorting her subjects and perspective. Along with the distortion found in many of the artist’s paintings, she still includes a reference to reality, emphasizing a spatial quality. Nichole doesn’t entirely focus on one particular style; instead she paints according to the initial experience she receives from her chosen subject. |
